This role typically operates on a shift basis and therefore requires a strong background in process equipment and mechanical systems, together with the ability to carry out basic mechanical repairs as needed and experience in RCA problem solving.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Take responsibility for all mechanical maintenance activities during the assigned shift across the full plant, including the Plasterboard Plant, Gypsum Plant, Profile Plant and Pastose Plant.

  • Apply strong technical knowledge of mechanical maintenance for equipment such as belt conveyors, bucket elevators, screw conveyors, pumps, gearboxes, mills, and the alignment of fans and blowers.

  • Demonstrate practical knowledge of arc, MIG and TIG welding, as well as gas cutting and plasma cutting.

  • Use solid fabrication skills in structural and sheet metal work.

  • Follow and comply with all company Environmental, Health and Safety procedures, including the work permit system, LOTOTO and risk assessments, to ensure the safety of yourself and others.

  • Follow instructions from supervisors and complete assigned tasks effectively and in a timely manner.

  • Support mechanical maintenance activities across key process areas, including the stucco silo, wet and dry additives, pulp and glue systems, mixer, setting belt, open roller conveyors, shear and tipple conveyor.

  • Carry out preventive maintenance in line with the planned schedule for assigned equipment, update SAP PM orders accurately, and arrange the required spare parts where necessary.

  • Adhere closely to the preventive maintenance plan to minimise equipment breakdowns and production disruption.

  • Monitor equipment failures and make recommendations or improvements to prevent recurrence.

  • Read and interpret technical drawings, standard forms and maintenance procedures accurately.

  • Identify opportunities to improve plant processes through modifications and equipment enhancements.

  • Ensure effective one-to-one communication and full shift handover at the end of each working day.

  • Apply continuous improvement techniques, including RCA, when troubleshooting critical equipment and resolving faults.

  • Contribute to strong individual and team performance while complying with company policies and procedures.

  • Manage spare parts for the assigned area and maintain accurate records in the spare parts issue register.

  • Develop computer skills and maintain accurate shift log entries and SAP PM order updates.

  • Update operation and maintenance documentation in line with KIMS standards.

  • Identify energy-saving opportunities and support projects that improve energy efficiency.

  • Maintain clean-as-you-go standards in line with the 5S methodology to promote workplace organisation and efficiency.

  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with colleagues.

What we’d love for you to have:

We are interested in you as a person: your attitude, behaviors and values. As long as you have the willingness to learn anything you need for the role that you don't already have, we'd love to speak to you. If you have experience in the following areas – this is an added advantage:

  • Diploma or ITI in Mechanical Engineering, Fitter, or a related technical trade.

  • 3–5 years of hands-on experience in mechanical maintenance, troubleshooting and repair within a manufacturing environment, ideally in a gypsum board plant, the building materials sector, or a similar continuous process industry.

  • Experience maintaining and repairing mechanical equipment used in gypsum board production plants.

  • Strong knowledge of preventive and breakdown maintenance for rotating and static equipment.

  • Experience in the repair, alignment and maintenance of pumps, conveyors and bucket elevators.

  • Good working knowledge of gearboxes, bearings, couplings, chains, sprockets, belts and pulleys.

  • Experience fault-finding and repairing hydraulic and pneumatic systems.

  • Knowledge of lubrication systems, shaft alignment and mechanical seals.

  • Familiarity with welding, gas cutting and general fabrication work to support maintenance activities.

  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, equipment manuals and maintenance documentation.

  • Experience planning and recording maintenance activities using SAP.

  • Knowledge of spare parts identification, maintenance planning and work order management within SAP.

  • Good understanding of safety procedures, permit-to-work systems, and isolation/lockout-tagout practices.

  • Ability to identify root causes of equipment failure and implement effective corrective actions.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word and Excel.

  • Good verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with production and maintenance teams.

  • Flexibility to work across different shifts and respond to breakdowns when required.

  • Ability to work independently during shifts while collaborating effectively with the wider team.

  • A mindset focused on continuous improvement, good housekeeping and equipment reliability.

  • Confidence to make sound maintenance decisions based on available information and plant conditions.
